The Harris-Trump presidential debate has taken place, and Stephen Colbert is still reeling from the many blows Vice President Kamala Harris managed to land on former President Donald Trump.

"Kamala Harris came in needing to rattle Trump's cage, and now that it's over they are still looking for pieces of his cage in low orbit," the Late Show host says in the live monologue above. "Harris got under his skin like she was stuffing in butter and rosemary, it was beautiful."

Colbert goes on to pick out a number of highlights, from Harris' facial expressions when Trump was talking ("She looked at him the way a parent looks at a kid giving a presentation on why they should be allowed to get a pet tiger") to Trump's now-infamous comment about immigrants eating dogs that he "saw on television".

"I saw on television there's this one town where they make the dogs do all the work," says Colbert, in Trump impression mode. "They are the police, the fire department, everything. Little puppies. No I saw it, they call them the Paw Patrol and their boss is a little boy."

To finish, Colbert praises Harris' debate performance and says there's "nothing that could have made tonight any better for Kamala Harris," before abruptly cutting to the news that Taylor Swift has now endorsed her.

"I stand corrected," he says.
