In the tradition of movies like Dumb and Dumber, Cabin Boy, and The Big Lebowski comes The Gutter, a satisfyingly stupid comedy about bowling, fame, and lovable losers. The hilarious film's first trailer gives you a taste of the mirthful mayhem in store.
Created by brothers Isaiah Lester and Yassir Lester, The Gutter stars Shameik Moore as Walt, an unlikely bowling prodigy whose mentor is a drunk named Skunk (D'Arcy Carden). Setting out to save the bowling alley that's become a home to them and fellow misfits — like street preacher Brotha Candy (Killing It's Rell Battle) — they take to the competitive circuit, striking big wins and bigger paydays. But along the way, they attract the attention of a retired and ruthless queenpin (Susan Sarandon in villain mode) who is all too happy to return to the lanes and crush them.
Out of the movie's SXSW premiere, I declared in my review (which is quoted in the film's first trailer), "I can't remember the last time a comedy this stupid was so smart in its jokes. The Gutter is the kind of comedy that scares the hell out of distributors because it doesn't play it safe. Sure, not every joke lands and some do spark gasps alongside giggles. But the Lesters have strategically stuffed so many goofy gags and such cleverly cast comedic performers, that from the first frame to the last The Gutter is a winner."
Magnolia Pictures will debut The Gutter in theaters and on digital Nov. 1.
