Have you thanked Beyoncé today?
If you've been on TikTok over the past few days, you've probably noticed users thanking Beyoncé for seemingly anything.
You may notice that at just about any awards ceremony, celebrities thank Beyoncé in their speeches. Kanye rushing the stage when Taylor Swift beat Beyoncé for album of the year; Adele losing her gourd over Beyoncé when she won album of the year; Britney Spears, Lizzo, Lady Gaga, the list goes on.
And why wouldn't you want to thank Beyoncé? She is the GOAT, the queen, and one of the most popular, powerful, and important artists of the 21st century. As someone who has seen her live multiple times, I can't argue with it. Thank you, Beyoncé.
The celebrity thanking has reached TikTok, where users are thanking Beyoncé at Thanksgiving, or for their dog not having cancer, or for... nothing?
Most of the posts online are seemingly pretty innocent. Folks are thanking Beyoncé for the big and mundane things in their lives. There is, however, a baseless conspiracy theory that might be at the root of the trend that most posters might not be aware of — one that ties to Beyoncé's godlike power and the religious iconography in the musician's songs and music videos. Forbes wrote, for instance, that the "meme appears to have originated from a bizarre stew of conspiracy theories" that resurfaced after the arrest of Sean "Diddy" Combs. Jojo Siwa even made a nod towards it at during a speech at the Industry Dance Awards.
But, ultimately, the TikTok trend is mostly people having fun thanking Beyoncé for anything and everything.
Update: This story was updated with new information about the trend and to reflect the nature of most of the TikTokkers' posts.
